Study the Witch-Hunt has an excellent movie review, but here's another:

Movie Review

"Good Night, and Good Luck," Directed by George Clooney and starring David Straithairn, Patricia Clarkson, George Clooney, Jeff Daniels, Robert Downey Jr, and Frank Langella

It is impossible to say too many bad things about Senator Joseph McCarthy, who symbolized the postwar anti-communist witchhunt, and it is impossible to draw too many parallels with George W Bush. Consequently, "Good Night, and Good Luck" is a fine movie experience.

The setting is the last days of McCarthy's dark power. Very appropriate black and white is used to portray the characters, mostly CBS TV reporters headed by the venerable Edward R. Murrow. Murrow is wonderfully channeled by premier actor David Straithairn. McCarthy plays himself in video clips. No one else could have done it as well. McCarthy actually had a raspy, breathy, TV delivery that, today, draws quick comparison to movie evil incarnate, Darth Vader.

Also appearing via video clip is President Dwight Eisenhower, who is already famous for having warned the world about the American military-industrial complex. In this movie appearance, the Republican President of the 1950s gives us clear warning about the one we have now. In fact, the entire movie warns us about witch hunting, distorting the truth, government secrecy, interfering in the Middle East, and allowing the most powerful cultural tool invented so far, television, to bury rather than uplift human potential.

Attention must be called to director/actor George Clooney's contribution. How many glamorous matinee idols would have cast themselves as Murrow's jowly sidekick? How many Hollywood superheroes would have made this progressive film at all?

Moviegoers who are looking, at long last, for an honest and overall appraisal of this shameful period of American history may be disappointed, because "Good Night and Good Luck" deals with barely a thread of the whole nasty cloth. The one progressive character doesn't get a chance to explain his views or motivations, and it's misleading to portray Senator McCarthy as actually leading the anticommunist crusade rather than just opportunistically using it. That said, everything else about "Good Night and Good Luck" deserves to be sung in praise.

Lodging anywhere on the Gulf Coast is a big problem. People might want to route through Houston, then make the 4 hour drive and come back that same evening. Another possiblity is taking an overnight bus. It's 8 hours' drive from Dallas.

Check for a major article on the situation for workers on the Gulf Coast.
